How to Reallocate redgate Monitor Licenses to a New Installation

There are two reasons why you might wish to do this:

  • Migrating redgate Monitor to a new server – you need to move licenses from the decommissioned server to the new one. You can use the same Reallocate licenses part of this process if you just need to stop using a license on one installation and start using it on another.
  • Reallocating spare entitlements to a different redgate Monitor installation – only possible if doing online license activation on red-gate.com, using your RedgateID, on redgate Monitor 11.2.3 and later (if you are on an earlier version and can't upgrade, or are still using legacy serial activation, contact Redgate support).

Migrating redgate Monitor to a new server

The process is slightly different depending on the versions of redgate Monitor involved.

Migrating to v11.2.3 or later

In this case, the process breaks down neatly into two stages, with minimal disruption to monitoring, since you don't have to deactivate the old license until after the migration is complete.

1. Move redgate Monitor

  1. Take a backup of the existing redgate Monitor repository.
  2. Restore this backup on the new server.
  3. Install redgate Monitor on the new server, and on the installation screen when asked which database to use, select use existing database and select the restored database.
  4. Run through the rest of the installer and then click finish to launch the website.

2. Reallocate licenses

  1. In a web browser, enter the address of the new redgate Monitor installation to which you wish to allocate licenses
  2. Log in and go to the Configuration > Licensing
  3. Click Allocate your licenses on red-gate.com
  4. Under Additional licenses <installation name> is not using find the license you wish to reallocate to this machine. You'll see that currently the entitlements are "in-use by other installations"
  5. Click Start using this license
  6. In a web browser, enter the address of the redgate Monitor installation where you wish to stop using the existing licenses that we reallocated in step 7-9
  7. Open Configuration > Licensing
  8. Remove the license from the old server:
    • If the existing license was serial-activated (pre 11.2.3), click Deactivate next to the license in the Licenses
    • If the existing license was RedgateID-activated, click Allocate your licenses on red-gate.com, and under 'Licenses <installation name> is using', find the license and click Stop using this license
  9. Return to the Configuration > Licensing page on the new server and hit refresh (F5)
  10. The licenses should automatically now switch over to the new installation

Migrating to a pre-11.2.3 installation

If you need to stay on a legacy version of redgate Monitor, you need to deactivate the license on the old server before you move the redgate Monitor installation, so the period of disruption is potentially longer.

  1. On the old server, Deactivate your license on the Configuration > Licensing
  2. Follow the Move redgate Monitor steps from the previous section
  3. On the new server, activate your license on the Configuration > Licensing page

Reallocating spare entitlements to a different redgate Monitor installation

Follow the steps below if you're running v11.2.3 or later. If you are on an earlier version and can upgrade to the latest version, do so and then follow the steps. If you can't upgrade, open a ticket with Redgate support.

  1. If you are on v11.2.3 or later but still using serial key activation, first switch to redgate.com-activated licenses
  2. In a web browser, enter the address of the new Redgate Monitor installation to which you wish to allocate spare entitlements from a license being used elsewhere
  3. Log in and go to the Configuration > Licensing
  4. Click Allocate your licenses on red-gate.com
  5. Under Additional licenses <installation name> is not using find the license you wish to reallocate to this machine. You'll see that currently the entitlements are "in-use by other installations"
  6. Click Start using this license
  7. Back on Configuration > Licensing page hit refresh, and redgate Monitor should automatically license any unlicensed server on this new installation, using the spare entitlements.
