Hi @JoJ
Did you upgrade to SSMS 18.5 and then install SQL Search 3.5.1.2598 or did you install SQL Search before the SSMS upgrade?
If it was before, you'll need to install SQL Search 3.5.1.2598 again now that you've upgraded SSMS.
If it was after upgrading SSMS, please can you attach a screenshot of what you're seeing? -
Hi,
I installed SQL Search 3.5.1.2598 after I installed SSMS 18.5.
I can not send you a screenshot because there is nothing to see when I click on the button.
Maybe there is al logfile but I don't know where.

I'm having the same issue as @JoJ where clicking the SQL Search button in the toolbar in SSMS 18.5.1 does nothing.
I had upgraded to SSMS 18.5.1, and after upgrading clicking the SQL Search button did nothing. I then uninstalled SQL Search, downloaded the current version from the website, then installed it again. I then started SSMS and the problem remains: clicking SQL Search doesn't do anything.
If I uninstall SSMS 18.5.1 and go back to 18.4 which is what I had previously been running, SQL Search 3.5.1.2598 works again.

Hi all
I have just been advised that this is a known issue and for now we have a workaround.
When you're connected to the server, and if SQL Search is disabled, choosing disconnect on Object Explorer then connecting enables SQL Search. -
Hi Victoria,
Your solution does not work for me.
The button in ssms is not disabled, it doesn't do anything.
-
Hello. I upgraded to SSMS 18.5.1 and have lost the SQL Search menu option completely even with SQL Search 3.5.0.2590 installed. I'm happy to try installing SQL Search 3.5.1.2598 if a link to it is provided.
-
@Victoria W It's working for me now. Thanks.
-
Hi @paul_deffenbaugh
Whenever a new version of SSMS is installed, the Redgate add-on tools need reinstalling after the upgrade.
Here's the latest SQL Search installer:
https://download.red-gate.com/checkforupdates/SQLSearch/SQLSearch_3.5.1.2598.exe
-
@Victoria W Just an FYI, that the link on the support article about 18.5 compatibility (https://productsupport.red-gate.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008725017) has a link that says it is for 3.51.2598, but the link goes to 3.50.2590.
Other links on that page are incorrect as well with the text older than the link or vice versa.
-
Thanks for pointing this out @Ladewig, I've updated the links!
-
The linked version worked. Thanks,
-
This link is still serving 3.4.1.2506 https://www.red-gate.com/products/sql-development/sql-search/installer/

I'm having this problem now in SSMS 18.5.1, version 15.0.18333.0. I see the SqlSearch button and it's enabled, but clicking does nothing. I've unintalled SqlSearch and installed the version mentioned above, but nothing seems to fix it.

Hi @cell001uk
This is a known issue the development team is aware of and they're working on a fix.
In the meantime, the workaround is to disconnect your SQL server from SSMS Object explore, then close and reopen SQL Search, finally reconnect your SQL Server.
Sorry for the inconvenience. -
Hi I can't close and re-open sql search as it can't be opened to begin with. I might try uninstalling ssms and installation 18.5.0 instead.
-
I closed SSMS 18.5.1, deleted \Users\undunc\AppData\Local\Red Gate\SQL Search 3 folder, installed the linked https://download.red-gate.com/checkforupdates/SQLSearch/SQLSearch_3.5.1.2598.exe file over the top of 3.4xxx and it worked for me on SSMS 18.5.1Redgate can comment on whether that's a good idea or not
-
Won't work for me unfortunately as AppData\Local\Red Gate doesn't contain a folder for SQL Search 3
-
The only working solutions for me was to uninstall everything from redgate.
Then to clean up the registery and all the folders from redate.
Then I installes ssms 18.4 and sql prompt 10.2.0.15168.
This worked for me.

@cell001uk
Could you try uninstalling all Redgate tools, and then reinstall the latest version using this installer: https://download.red-gate.com/installers/SQLToolbelt/2020-06-24/SQLToolbelt.exe
-
@JoJ
It should work fine in SSMS 18.5.1. If you upgrade your SSMS now, does SQL Search stop working again? So sorry for the inconvenience this is causing! -
@Tianjiao_Li no joy unfortunately, same thing happens where the button is enabled but doesn't do anything.
-
I updated "SQL dependency Tracker" yesterday. I started SSMS after this update and now I have the same problem. The SQL Search button is enabled but isn't doing anything. Just before this update it still worked.
-
I have also reverted to SSMS 18.4 and Sql Search 3.4.1.2506 and works now.
-
@StephenLag
Would you mind to try uninstall and reinstalling SQL Search one more time and let us know if the problem persists?
I couldn't reproduce the issue with SQL Dependency tracker. Apart from those, do you have any other plugins in SSMS 18.5.1? -
I did uninstall all redgate products and then reinstalling all but the problem still exists
-
Do you have any other plugins in your SSMS?
-
Yes, I have one other plugin installed but that plugin hasn't changed for a few months now.
I uninstalled everything, ran CCleaner(Custom Clean, Registry Clean), restarted, installed older version of all the redgate tools and it started working again.
If I then update to newest it stops working -
Is there any further info on this problem? Is it experienced by everyone who upgrades ssms to 18.5 or only a few?
-
Sigh, it stopped working today after 18 days of bliss. Closed and opened a few times. Eventually started working. Sometimes the same behaviors do yield different results.
.

Thanks all for your patience!
Our development team is investigating this issue and we'll update here shortly.
