SSMS22 & SQL Prompt 11 crash after latest SSMS22 update (10-02-2026)

I updated SSMS 22 to latest release (10th feb 2026), and now it crashes consistantly if SQL Prompt 11(latest version) is also installed.
I had to remove SQL Prompt to get SSMS 22 to stop crashing.
I have tried to do complete uninstall of both SSMS 22 & SQL prompt 11, but with same result

Both SQL Prompt and SQL Search were mentioned in the Redgate update, but it seems like SQL Dependency Tracker also has an issue with the latest version of SSMS 22.3.

For those of you who didn't get Redgate's email about 5 hours ago…

    ---

We’re writing to inform you about a compatibility issue affecting several products within our Productivity solution area when used with the latest version of SSMS.

    What happened

Microsoft updated some of the underlying libraries as part of the SSMS 22.3.2 release, which changed how extensions are loaded during startup. This created compatibility issues for a range of extension vendors, including several of Redgate’s Productivity tools.

We’ve been working closely to address this as quickly as possible.

    What’s happening next

We are releasing fixes in two stages:

    1. Interim fix – already available for SQL Prompt

We released an interim compatibility fix for SQL Prompt last Friday. Customers who update SQL Prompt and are using the latest version of SSMS can continue working without disruption.

    Please note:
Interim fixes for other affected Productivity tools are coming on Wednesday. These updates will ensure compatibility with the latest SSMS release, although they will not support some earlier SSMS versions. This allows customers who have already updated SSMS to remain productive while we complete broader fixes.

    2. Full compatibility update – coming shortly after

We are preparing a broader fix that restores compatibility across multiple supported SSMS versions.

We will communicate as soon as this is available.

Where to find the latest updates

For the most current information, downloads, and release notes, please visit our documentation pages.

We understand how disruptive tooling issues can be and appreciate your patience while we work through this carefully. Our priority is to restore stable, predictable compatibility across supported environments.

If you have urgent concerns or need guidance on version alignment, our support team is ready to help.

    Best regards,
    The Redgate Team

I guess they don't email every SQL Prompt user (purchased)…

Following the instructions on Installer changes in SQL Prompt 11.3.6

When installing SQL Prompt 11.3.6, the installer checks for installed SSMS version. You can download the latest version of SQL Prompt from this page.

I've downloaded the installer three times, hoping that it will eventually give me 11.3.6 but it only ends up installing 11.3.5 which of course then crashes SSMS.

Hope they can fix this, ASAP.

I am still having this exact issue as of February 17, with SSMS 22.3.0 and the latest version of Red Gate tools downloaded and installed today. My SQL Prompt version shows as 11.3.5.21197.

As i understood if you have ssms 22.3 installed installation program should offer you to install 11.3.6 of sql prompt. But that does not happened for me.

This morning I downloaded the latest SQL Toolbelt Essentials which updated SQL Prompt to Version 11.3.6.21421 and SSMS 22.3 still crashes.

It all seems to be working fine again. This is what Redgate communicated:

Thank you for your patience, the tools in the TBE bundle have now all received updates so that they now work with SSMS 22.3.

    What caused this issue
SSMS 22.3 introduced changes to internal components used by extensions. Older Versions of the tools depend on earlier version of these components.
When loaded in SSMS 22.3, this mismatch causes SSMS to crash during startup or when Object Explorer in SSMS is accessed.

The latest version on the tools will now work with SSMS 22.3, however they will no longer work with SSMS 22.2 and below. SSMS 21 and earlier, and Visual Studio, are unaffected.

I was having the same issue after updating SSMS 22.2.1 to 22.3.0, couldn't connect to SQL servers without crashing out of SSMS. I followed the instructions in Bjorn's post here - https://productsupport.red-gate.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/33887404886301/comments/33895622349853 and it resolved the issue. Nice job Bjorn and thank you! Hopefully Redgate or Microsoft will address this issue soon.

I went into "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo\v4.0_17.0.0.0__89845dcd8080cc91\Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo.dll" and copied the file.

    Then i pasted it into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Prompt 11\Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo.dll"

Now it works since SQL Prompt finds the library. I can connect to my servers again without SSMS 22.3 crashing

Hey, vahidha, that works in a limited way for me.
SQL Search doesn't seem to work, but SSMS isn't crashing.

I solved this issue with the following approach:

    I copied the DLL from
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 22\Release\Common7\IDE\Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo.dll
    into the folder
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Prompt 11

After this change, SSMS version 22.3.2 is working normally with SQL Prompt version 11.3.6.21421 without crashing, and SQL Search is also functioning correctly.

James W simply install the latest version of SQL Search or SQLPrompt from these links.

For anyone reading along and attempting to fix this on their own, if you cannot find Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo.dll, try checking the install location of SSMS. Found mine in \Common7\IDE and copied to the SQL Prompt 11 folder and fixed my SSMS 22.3
