Monitoring Azure with On Premises SQL Monitor

My shop is getting ready to deploy to Azure for the first time. We have SQL Monitor installed on premises and want to monitor our Azure SQL VMs with it.

Will we incur a cost pulling data down from the cloud by monitoring the resources from an on premises environment?

If we will incur a cost, is there a way for me to calculate an estimated cost of monitoring across lanes?

Many thanks,

Patrick

    Hi Patrick,

Although we don't charge for you pulling down data Azure probably will. It might be better to have a second base monitor in Azure on an IaaS machine to monitor your other Azure VMs. There are some costs for data within Azure but believe these to be less.

    Tom_C,

Thank you for your response. We are on a short runway so are going to monitor Azure resources from our on premises installation for the short term.

Is there a reason for choosing IaaS over PaaS for the Azure platform? I notice the install documentation says an Azure database will require a SQL Server login. I'm assuming that is with a PaaS install?

    Regards,
