As for increasing tensions, I think the entire thread of negativity that followed from Red Gate's announcement caused more tension than my mere flippant comment which was entirely germane in its response.
Indeed. And yet if you back up one more step, you'll find that Red Gate's announcement itself caused even more tension than the thread of negativity which responded to it. / comments

It may well be that they've done a lot. But who knows? No one from Red Gate has posted to say anything they've done since they bought the tool from Lutz Roeder.
All we know for certain is that they produced a Pro version that few people wanted.
So are they raising the price (a) to cover all the development work they've done on Reflector for free, or (b) to cover all the development work they did on the Pro version which few people wanted to buy? / comments

Not regular Red Gate users? Of course we're not.
For what we are is regular Reflector users. I've been using Reflector since at least 2005, well before Lutz Roeder sold it to Red Gate. Reflector has always been free, and Red Gate pledged to keep it free when they bought it. Now they tell us they lied.
Leaving that aside, what improvements have they made to Reflector? They're asking us to pay for Reflector 7 Basic, but it's not clear to me that they've done anything with it since August 2008. (In fact, I asked a question about that on these forums, and they seem to have ignored it.) It appears as though we're being asked to pay $35 for...nothing, other than the ability to keep using a tool we've already been using. Who wouldn't bristle at that? / comments

What's new in Reflector since Lutz owned it?
Red Gate,
Since you tell us that your efforts on Reflector in the last two and a half years are worth making a "forever free" product non-free, tell us what you've done.
What changes have been made...
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
But to translate, apparently "perpetual licensing" doesn't mean anything. Or perhaps it merely means "not time-bombed". It certainly doesn't mean what any other company would mean if they said "perpetual license".
But then, you guys seem to have trouble with the meaning of words like "commitment" and "free" too, so I guess this shouldn't come as a shock. / comments
