Can't upgrade/install SQL Source Control

I'm posting here, as I'm been back and forth with Red Gate Support and getting no where. Their latest advice to me was to attempt to use a 3rd party program to attempt to remove the existing version of Source Control, which is at my own risk. They have offered no solutions to fix the application, so I'm wondering if anyone in the community is having the same issue and/or has managed to fix it.

I recently updated all my Red Gate tools. I had been holding back, due to the mess with SSMS 22 and Red Gate tools compatibility, but things looked they had stabilised, so I updated SSMS 22 and then all the Red Gate tools via the toolbelt installer. Everything was successful except SQL Source Control (the Toolbelt attempted to install 8.1.12), which returned the following error:

MSI returned failed code 1603: Fatal error during installation.

There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel; or package vendor.

I therefore downloaded the installer for Source Control separately, which was 8.1.13, and tried. Same error. I tried running as an admin, same error.

I therefore tried to uninstall SQL Source Control 8.1.3, so I could attempt a fresh install:

1 items were not uninstalled successfully

SQL Source Control 8

Fatal error during installation.

I tried installing on 2 different networks and as a local admin account; same 1603 error. I tried disabling our Virus software; same error. IT support, at the office, checked the monitoring software, which logs for both blocked applications and network blocks; nothing blocked on my machine in recent history.

Today I did the following, however, I still don't have a working install of SQL Source Control (best I can tell it's now completely non-existent on my machine):

  1. Attempted to install 8.1.13 via its installer. Failed.
  2. Attempted to install 8.1.12 via toolbelt installer. Failed.
  3. Attempted to uninstall. Failed.
  4. Changed the DisabledRollback registry key to true.
  5. Attempted to install 8.1.13.  Failed. This, however, deleted the application from the system, rather than rolling back to 8.1.3.
  6. Attempted to install 8.1.13 again. Failed. Application files were left in situ. Due to registry key change, application did not appear in SSMS 22 though.
  7. Attempted to uninstall. Failed. Application files were, however, removed and application disappeared from Control Panel.
  8. Searched the registry for any keys that appeared to be related to SQL Source Control and deleted them.
  9. Changed the DisabledRollback registry key to false.
  10. Attempted to install 8.1.13.  Failed.
  11. Attempted to install 8.1.12 via toolbelt installer. Failed.
  12. Attempted to install 8.1.13.  Failed.

Does anyone in the community have any ideas here, as I'm out of idea, as is our internal support, and Red Gate have offered no ideas so far; truly the only response I've had is “Works fine on my machine” and the suggestion we use a 3rd party tool our own risk; that doesn't instill me with confidence. A such, any new ideas are very welcome.

    Hi all,

I troubleshot this with Tom and it was due to a rogue version of SSMS installed on the machine. Once we removed it, the install was able to complete. If anyone else comes across this error, we encourage you to reference the Windows Event Viewer logs as it pointed to the culprit.
