Restored Tabs not Connecting

SQL Prompt 11.0.8.17849, SSMS 21.6.17

Every morning when I start SSMS, some tabs reconnect and some don't. There doesn't seem to be any pattern for which ones don't, except they tend to be higher on the list (older). Today, the first tab connected (oldest), the next six didn't, and the remaining six did. It's not one server either. Every non-reconnected tab should have connected to a server that a reconnected tab successfully did.

If I were to connect one of the tabs that didn't, then close SSMS and restart, it would reconnect. It's only breaks over night. I don't know if it's a time thing or what.

Last night I made sure all 13 tabs were connected. Then I enabled verbose logging and shut down. This morning the log had six lines like this. Nothing else in there seemed to be relevant.

2026-01-08 08:16:01.026 -06:00 [Debug] Tab not reconnected for reason: Skipping connection attempt for query ff6092c2-421d-4172-bf3e-c76acadeccc7 due to previous failure

Here are two other things that I think are related, but may not be and you can ignore if I'm crazy:

A non-reconnected tab that is saved to disk - If I try to save it (ctrl+s), I get prompted for a location. Like it can't remember that it was saved. Automatically reconnected tabs save normally.

If I open Object explorer, select a database, and go to Source Control, Source Control takes me to the Setup tab and asks to select a database. And oddly my database isn't on the dropdown (not that I want to set it up, it already is). If I go back and forth between OE and SC, it will eventually recognize it. This morning, it was back and forth twice before it worked. Yesterday, it was like five times. It's two times a lot more than it's five, but it doesn't seem to be deterministic.

None of these are catastrophic, just irritating. But if you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Here are some steps I took this morning:

    • Reconnected all tabs
    • Closed and reopened SSMS - all tabs reconnected
    • Restarted PC, opened SSMS - one of 13 tabs reconnected
    • Reconnected all tabs
    • Restarted PC, waited 3 minutes until CPU, Disc IO, and Ethernet activity stabilized.
    • Opened SSMS - two of 13 tabs reconnected

My PC does not reboot over night and did not reboot last night. I just wanted to see if a reboot made any difference and to see if something else starting up in the morning was interfering.

Also I upgraded to 11.3 because I like to introduce as many variables as possible.
