Hi Steve,
Since you are going to be monitoring a single server, I see no issues with you loading the base monitor service onto the same server as the web service. You could create a third box if you wish to have clear separation, but with regards to your usage, having the web/base monitor on the same server is completely viable.
The reason you may want to separate the web and base monitor services is when you are monitoring a large amount of servers at once. We have a documentation page here which may add some additional information for you: Example specifications for the Base Monitor and Website

If I'm doing the web and base install on the same box, what steps are needed on the actual SQL server that is being monitored?

Hi Steve,
No additional steps are required on the database server you intend to monitor through Redgate Monitor. Even if that server is the one hosting the RedGateMonitor data repository, you do not need to do any setup on that server.
All setup would be done on the server hosting the base monitor and web service. When going through the base monitor install, you'll be prompted to pick the location of the database repository. So long as that is done and working, you are ready to monitoring the server. After which, you can open the monitor ui, add the SQL Server, and it should begin monitoring it.

We have just purchased Redgate Monitor for a single server. We'd like to keep extra stuff off of the SQL server, so the web portion will be installed on a different server. Should the base monitor go on the web box, on the SQL box, or a third box? I've been watching the videos and it's not always clear which box they are referencing.
Thanks!
