SQL Doc will not start up

I am running the Tool Belt on a Windows 10 pc with 32 GB RAM. When I try to start up SQL Doc, nothing happens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the application. It works fine for a bit and then will not load either from within SSMS or from the Windows menu system.

The SQL Doc version is 5.2.13.3844.
The SSMS version is 19.2

    Hi John,

Thank you for reaching out. Can you try updating to the latest version and see if the issue persists?

I installed the new version of SQLDoc. The behavior did not change. It worked the first time I used it. When I closed it and tried to open it again the next day, I got a flash of spinning icon indicating it was starting to load and then nothing. I tried it from within SSMS and outside SSMS. Same result both times.

When I repaired the file through the Redgate Uninstaller, it worked again. I have tried to reproduce the error, but cannot do it consistently. I will update this thread if I figure out what the steps are to reproduce the error.

    Hi John,

I wasn't able to get the same behavior on my machine, using the SQL Doc and SSMS versions. Since the repair, has the issue occurred again?

Just got back from some time off, so I will keep an eye out for the issue and report if it happens again. Thanks for responding.

I'm having this same issue. I got it to work after a repair install, but just upgraded to latest version and issue is back. Get an hour glass after a starting the program from the menu but then it goes away and SQL Doc is not running in the task manager. Any other suggestions to fix this?

I uninstalled and reinstalled the SQL Doc and now it's starting up. Will let you know if this is a problem again in the future.

I have been having this same issue intermittently for several versions now.  Every once in a while it's like it loses the configuration of what to “start up” to and instead of just like, always popping up a login and display first, I think it's trying to use previous settings and those settings are getting mangled.

To “fix” it, I've had to try deleting/re-installing just the specific program, etc.  Invariably all that I find is that *eventually* when another patch/update comes out, I can go download the entire toolbelt installer instead, and hope it includes SQL Doc… cause when it does, at least the next time I try to use it it'll work for another time or two, rinse and repeat.

Knowing some of the other tools in the toolbelt which I've also been using for a really long time is why I am guessing it is to do with that startup window itself being the problem… especially trying to be helpful by saving your last attempted login I'm sure.  However, I could take it a step further and guess that ever since the “Trust server certificate” bit has been more mandatory, it is failing because it always loads that login screen with that bit disabled by default.  I do wonder if either just not displaying that window OR simply always selecting the Trust and Encrypt bits by default if it would actually help/fix the issue….

Either way it is an absolutely annoying and cloyingly the only one of these products which I'd love to use more if it'd just let me!  But genuinely, there must be more can be done on the Red Gate side.  Even the installation shortcuts and stuff never create properly for SQL Doc; again the only one of the products like that, and systemically like that…

I really hope someone out there reads this and can do anything to further the plot.

    Chris
