Help Me Better Understand Redgate Deploy

Hello team,

I've watched the video from the Feb 17, 2021, event today about Redgate Deploy but honestly came away wondering 1) why I want this if I focus on SQL Server and 2) how does this affect my current decision tree that includes SSDT, SQL Source Control, and SQL Change Automation.

Has there been a FoRG only talk that covers this in more detail?

Ultimately I'm confused and I really need Redgate to help me so I can continue to help us both.

Sadly I have to say I was disappointed in the talk because it felt like something I could have read in a few minutes. There wasn't a demo or any clear positioning.

Thanks!

    Hey Brian,

Great to hear from you -- and sorry for the confusion here.

Andrea on our team has a blog post coming out soon which will be a great resource for the exact questions you are asking. Thanks for the suggestion for having a FORG event which dives into this as well -- I'm not the organizer here but suspect that is something that can happen.

Essentially, Redgate Deploy is an offering that we're finding fits many of our customers who are in one or more of the following categories:
    • Prefer a subscription based offering
    • Have cross-platform environments and wish to implement DevOps for more than SQL Server
    • Want to utilize data virtualization / cloning, and prefer to have that packaged with the DevOps offering (having it separately is a procurement challenge for many customers)
For folks like you who are already knowledgeable about our tooling, this doesn't change how you would evaluate the tooling itself. The Redgate Deploy solution contains SQL Source Control and SQL Change Automation as components, for example.

This is really a short answer and Andrea's upcoming blog post will explain this much more elegantly, so I'll post the link to that when it's available as well.

    Hope this helps,
    Kendra

    Thanks @Kendra_Little !

    This helps.

Now where does Flyway fit in? Is it a part of this as well?

    Hi Brian,

Yes, Flyway fits into the "implement DevOps for more than SQL Server" aspect of Redgate Deploy.

    Essentially, Redgate Deploy provides:
    • Full authoring and deep CI/CD support for SQL Server and Oracle (if you're interested in how this maps to specific tool names, I wrote a bit about that here.)
    • Deployment automation support for additional databases via Flyway. These databases are: PostgreSQL, MySQL, DB2, Aurora MySQL, MariaDB, Percona XtraDB Cluster, Aurora PostgreSQL, Redshift, CockroachDB, SAP HANA, Sybase ASE, Informix, H2, HSQLDB, Derby, Snowflake, SQLite, Firebird.
While Flyway also works for SQL Server and Oracle, for most SQL Server and Oracle projects we find that customers want the additional features we have for those databases which includes the authoring support, greater version control integration, and full CI/CD features (a fully defined build process, static code analysis, test integration, etc).

Hi @BrianRandell! We've also now got a FoRG Q&A session coming up where you can find out more info on Deploy: https://forum.red-gate.com/discussion/87868/next-virtual-hangout-feat-solution-chat-weds-march-3-5-6pm-gmt-12-1pm-est-9-10am-pst#latest

OK @Kendra_Little, watching the demos means I need to to at least not keep my head in the sand and try this out.

    1) What's the most popular DBs that folks use FlyWay for? I've been seeing a lot of noise around PostgreSQL.

    2) How do FoRGs like me get a license to Redgate Deploy to start playing with this so I don't look stupid when a customer asks me about it? @EleanorH_RG can you help?

    Thanks again!

    Hi @BrianRandell ,

    For your question:
    1) What's the most popular DBs that folks use FlyWay for? I've been seeing a lot of noise around PostgreSQL.
You're correct, our research in this indicates that it is PostgreSQL.
