stopped at first screen - says hostname is null but it isn't

i dont have an oracle client on this machine - and may not get one so trying to manually connect.  I pinged the hostname and got this ip address - tried it with both server name and ip - same error (attached).  Clearly the hostname is not null.  how to proceed?

    Hi, thank you for your forum post.

    If you close the project configuration.  -> Now select the Tools menu on the Toolbar ->Application Options from the list that appears ->In the Connections section ->Check the 'Prefer direct connection' check box.  Does this action resolve the problem for you?
