Sorry to hear you've run into this issue.
We've seen SQL Prompt can cause SSMS freezes for some customers who were on early version of Prompt 9. To rule out if it's a Prompt issue, could you uninstall SQL Prompt, and check if problem disappear?
If it does and reoccurs when Prompt is reinstalled, could you confirm the full version of your SSMS? You may also find helpful the below article about managing memory within Prompt.

I have disabled everything I can think of from anti-virus to applications and haven't managed to pin anything specific down.
SQL Prompt periodically complains that the caching process is slow.
I am generally connected to 3+ different SQL servers, two are connecting across the internet/WAN, with about 60+ databases.
Is SQL Prompt possibly the problem and if so how can I tell, how can I reduce the cache update frequency and/or do anything else about this?
