This generally occurs because you do not have the correct bit version of the Oracle client installed for the version of Schema Compare for Oracle that you are using (32-bit or 64-bit each) - or alternately, you are using the wrong bit version of Schema Compare for Oracle to that of the Oracle client you do have installed.
I am using Schema Compare for Oracle 5.2.3 64-bit and have the Oracle 12.1 64-bit client installed and I have the option for both SID and Service name:

The version 3.1.1.350 gave possibility the possibility to select "Service Name", on the "Manual Connection" tab.
