ORA-28040: No matching authentication protocol

I am trying to compare the data of a local Oracle 11g XE with data from a remote Oracle 12c R2 database. When testing manual connection to the remote Oracle 12c R2 database i get the following error message and can not continue to compare the data:
ORA-28040: No matching authentication protocol

Is your THIN driver outdated?

    Hi, thank you for your support request.

    I personally encountered this error when I created a new Oracle 12cR2 test system.  To resolve the problem, I replaced a file in the Oracle 12c client called ojdbc8.jar file with the one available from this web page:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/jdbc/jdbc-ucp-122-3110062.html

    See attached screen shot, I placed a dark blue rectangle around the one I downloaded.
