How can we help you today? How can we help you today?

What have you been up to this July?

Hi everyone,

I'm kicking off the very first "what have you been up to this month" thread in the brand new FoRG forum!

This thread for you to let us know what you've been up to this month to help out Redgate as part of the FoRG program. It could be blogs, speaking, product/beta testing, research sessions with our teams, helping our support or product teams out with any bugs or tool issues, or have you seen us at an event or shared your knowledge about Redgate with someone this month?

If you are not currently doing anything but would like to be more involved with a product or an activity, just ping us an email to friends@red-gate.com and we’ll share some of our ideas with you to see how we can work together!

As you know by now, we love to share the successes and show our appreciation for the great work you guys are doing to support us. At the end of the month, we'll award one of you the title of being our 'Friend of the Month' - and make sure others at Redgate know what an awesome group you are!

Have a great month and we look forward to hearing from you all.

Cheers,

Nirali & the FoRG team

On July 20th, I will be presenting my "Tools and Tips: From Accidental to Efficient Data Warehouse Developer" session for 24 Hours of PASS. A large chunk of my session is showing off SQL Prompt and explaining why I can't work without it anymore :)

I've just had a conversation with James King about our SQL Monitor project. Unfortunately, it's not good news - we have other more pressing concerns at the moment, which I'm not at liberty to discuss fully. Yet.

What's the local equivalent of Vaguebooking? That.

I am busy planning/marketing TechBash 2017. Our CFP has been closed for a little while, we're announcing sessions this week, and still looking for sponsors. Ping me if you're interested in joining us at the Kalahari in the Poconos this Oct 4-6! We'd love to spread some Redgate or related product love.

I'm just starting the conversation among the SQL Server team in order to try to acquire some SQL Prompt licenses to our team.. As a new DBA at the company, I don't have a strong voice yet, but will keep doing it...

From the community side, nothing big to share yet ;)

Hi Alvin, we would be interested in sponsoring your event  Please could I get you to fill in our sponsorship form (www.red-gate.com/sponsorship) so that we can get you into the right channels. Just to let you know we won't be able to send any Redgaters out, unfortunately, as the September-October period is absolutely packed for us. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks! I forwarded the info to Andy Schwam, our sponsorship coordinator. He's going to fill out the form shortly (if he hasn't already).

Since there's no forum thread here for June, and the Google Group has now been disabled, I'll just put my June update in here instead

For the first time, I gave a SQL Saturday pre-conference session. It was in Iowa City and the topic was "Performance Tuning Third-Party Vendor SQL Server Databases", basically how to improve performance when vendors don't allow you to change the actual queries. It was well-received, and included demos of both SQL Monitor (planned to be part of my talk) and SQL Compare (unplanned, but came up during questions.)

The following day, I gave a regular session at SQL Saturday Iowa City on backup performance tuning. I demonstrate SQL Backup with this session because the UI contains all of the buttons I tell people to push via T-SQL code, and I can only assume it's valuable for those who don't like scripting in T-SQL.

First part of the month has been recovering from end of Microsoft's fiscal year (we do a bit of work for them). Now I'm getting ready for conference talks, etc. First up is a DLM talk at VSLive in Redmond in August where I'm working in more Ready Roll and adding SQL Clone to the talk along with OOB SSDT and other features provided by VSTS.

No community events for me - been traveling to customers almost every week. Wanted to share one story in particular that I think is appropriate. Two weeks ago onsite I was reviewing stored procedures with the DBA looking for performance improvements. She had SQL Prompt installed but didn't know about the code formatting features; I told her to press Ctrl-K, Ctrl-Y and the look on her face was priceless. She exclaimed, "this is SOOOOO cool! I'm going to tell everyone in the office about this!". So, while I haven't done any significant community work this month I've at least been making a difference in RG users' lives one DBA at a time.

July for me has been around presenting on Cognitive services in Azure. We had a DDDSydney event (http://2017.dddsydney.com.au/) where I presented a topic called 'Computer have feelings too'. Showed Text Analytic services such as sentiment analysis, Emotion API and vision API. Went down pretty well as I had attendees send through emails to me, which was analysed for sentiment and keyphrases in real time and shown in a web app during the preso.

This month, I've been continuing to work with the Foundry team on data masking. The work the team have been doing is really moving along, and I know there are very valid uses for such a tool going forward - just this week we have had to change a business process to cope with a lack of availability of such a facility. I'm also starting to discuss with Karis the work he is doing on data governance. Both of these areas are becoming key to our work as we increase focus on audit and regulatory work and prepare for new regulations such as the EU's GDPR.

    Hi Friends,

This month, we’re pleased to congratulate Dave Green as Friend of the Month!

The team have nominated Dave, who has helped out the Foundry team at Redgate build SQL Data Mask. Dave dedicated more than 10 hours this month talking to the Foundry team and his suggestions have had a direct impact on a number of major features. SQL Data Mask has now graduated to the Product division where we will now dedicate a full development team to this.

So a massive thank you to Dave and all your efforts this month!

I'd also like to say a big thank you to everyone who has posted to our brand new forum, and encourage you to keep doing so (https://forum.red-gate.com/post/discussion/friends-of-redgate) as you could be next month's Friend.

    – from all of us here at Redgate.

Many thanks to everyone at Redgate for the nomination - I'm really pleased that my input has been useful for the team, and I look forward to the continued development of SQL Data Mask into a key part of my professional data toolkit.
