Low memory.... needs a tweak...

Hello - I'm getting low memory warnings on my production and standby servers; however, they are showing EXACTLY the amount of memory I had allocated when the systems were set up. So the memory is not really "LOW" is it? (I can't really tell for sure as I'm only seeing percent used vs. percent free. My point being if I've allocated 14 gig of 16 gig total RAM to the SQL Server, then what am I seeing exactly? Percent used of 14 gig allocated, or 14 gig of 16 gig 'used'?)

    Hi Randy,
At the moment, the low memory warning is fixed at 80% used, so in your case this would be 12.8GB of 16GB. Since you've allocated 14GB to the SQL Server, it will then generate this incident type (but assuming it stays above 12.8GB used, will only be generated as a one-off).

What would you expect or want the value to be? A percentage of the memory used, a fixed amount, a combination of the two, or something different? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jason

Usually from each 8GB of memory I left for OS 1GB. So if on the server 16GB I allocate for the SQL 14GB.
Looks like such memory allocating is recommended by Microsoft.

    Hello Jason -

Well, I don't know if this is possible, but what would be useful is:
Machine Total Memory Available NN GB
Memory Allocated to SQL Srvr NN GB YY % of Total memory
Memory Currently Used NN GB YY % of Memory Alloc.
Memory Available NN GB YY % of Memory Alloc.

It would also be helpful if, in the final product a threshold is 'settable' by the end user over which the alert would be made manifest (such as show me when consumed memory reaches NN GB and/or YY %). Even better would be a couple of thresholds; warning (yellow) and critical (red).

(As long as you're asking ;-)

    Hi randy,
Thanks for the information, I'll document this for consideration in the final release.

    Cheers,
    Jason
