Hmmm... apparently, it insisted on performing a read of the old backup file on the share. It suddenly finished, but I have no idea what it was doing.

I suspect this was a hold-over of trying to work around a problem where the backup validation scans the entire backup, as referenced in the following thread:

Last night, two of my backups failed. I think I have a flakey switch, and the two backups failed because the share suddenly appeared unavailable about 25-30 minutes into the backup. (If you guys happen to know of some other reason that might happen, let me know, but that not the purpose of the post.)
So, in checking out all my stuff, I see that one of the machines has SBCCoreServices.exe running at about 20% utilization. Using Process Explorer, it appears to still be attached to a backup share from the day before when I was testing. I don't know what it's doing, as QA doesn't show any DB activity.
In any event, I restarted the service, and now it's steadily consuming about 4-5% of my CPU. Other (with identical hardware) machines are showing it as less than 1%.
Anyway I can find out what it thinks it's doing?
Thanks,
Marc
