  • Improved editing of backup jobs
  • Asynchronous execution of backups and restores
  • Monitoring of backups started by the SQL Server Agent or other SQL Backup users, not just those started by the current user session.
  • A compression analyser which can analyse and report the most likely compression achievable during your backups

Installation

To install please run SQL Backup 5 Beta Setup.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.
You will need to install the server components on all the instances of SQL Server you register in the GUI.

See the help file (sqlbackup.chm) for details.

Requirements

The User Interface components require Windows 2000 or above and .NET framework v 2.0.

The Service components do not require .NET 2.0 however they do require Windows 2000 or above and SQL Server 2000 SP3 or above.

Licensing

This software is pre-release and thus is not supported. You are licensed to use this software in a capacity as a beta tester. This license to use SQL Backup 5.0 Beta lasts until the earlier of the final release of SQL Backup 5.0 or April 30th 2007. After this date SQL Backup 5.0 may become non-functional.

Getting Started

Open the user interface by clicking on the shortcut in the start menu or run RedGate.SQLBackup.UI.exe from the installation folder.

Register a server in the popup which appears.

It is advised that you immediately update your test server with the SQL Backup 5.0 server components as this will allow you to get the most out of your Beta testing experience and enabled many of the addition features introduced in version 5.0.

Feedback

Please provide feedback by posting your comments on this message board. All feedback will be rewarded and there are extra incentives for beta testers who provide the most constructive feedback.

Update: 11th Dec 2006 13.18 GMT: We have just released a refresh of the beta which fixes a crash when activity occurs and the 4.6 server components are installed on the server. If you downloaded the original beta and are affected by this issue then please download the new beta from the link above, fully uninstall the original beta and reinstall the new beta.

Please tell me that was a misprint and that you don't have to install SQL CE on the server just to do a backup.

    Hi Gunneyk,

The engine components do use SQL Server Compact Edition for extended data collection about backups (in a similar way to how JET works) and requires no installation by you.

SQL Server Compact Edition "runs" in the service's process space with the same priviliges as the SQL Backup process so should not affect any other processes or installations.

It is the same as us having an external dependency on any other DLL. The warning is there at this time as it was part of our agreement with Microsoft to get a license for SQL Server Compact Edition so we could run the SQL Backup beta at this time.

If the service using SQL Server Compact Edition as an embedded database raises serious issues for you then I would be interested in hearing them and looking at ways we can allievate any problems before the final release.

However just to clarify there are no pre-requistes to install before running our installer.

    Many thanks,

    - James

I don't see it as the same as any other DLL. Most DLL's are simply a library for the classes you need to do your chores. This is essentially an entire application or database engine you are invoking with the call to do backup. I would much prefer to at least see an option to use a database of my choosing for the data store. We come to expect these days that most 3rd party apps will require a data store. But I don't want something that is hidden from me and essentially out of my control. When I run a XP I want as little going on as possible to get the job done and no more.

    Hi there,

I'm sorry to say that at this time I have no information on the pricing structure for version 5. Any pricing changes, if there are any, will be announced closer to the release date as and when any firm decisions are made.

    Thanks,

    - James

    Hi John,
sorry, we won't be releasing another beta prior to the final release.
Both these will be supported however.
The final release is scheduled for May 2007

    regards,
