I don't think there is any official recommendations in the Help guide.
I'm sure RedGate will confirm if that's correct or not.
As a general rule, I would never run anything else on a server with SQL Server apart from SQL Server itself - the base monitor can be quite resource hungry.
I have 50 instances to monitor and have the database on one server and the Base monitorwebsite on another and that works well. / comments

For number 3 above, I think you can only use the Custom Metrics to pull back Perfmon counters that are exposed to SQL.
You can't pull back all perfmon counters that the server uses.
As an example, I'd love to be able to pull back the VMware Processor and Memory metrics as these tell me what the server is actually using without having to pull up the vSphere Client which I don't have access to in a lot of places. / comments

Thanks for that! Very useful.
I've got a whole bunch of small outages that don't appear to show.
I would have thought that it might have shown 0.50000000000 rather than 0.00000000000 for downtime minutes for the example below.
SQL Server instance unreachable from: 6 Oct 2015 10:03:22 PM
SQL Server became reachable again at: 6 Oct 2015 10:03:54 PM
It's only 30 seconds so not the end of the world. / comments
