David Thanks. I'll leave it case sensitive. One small point. On the Project Configuration 'Options' tab there's a couple of tick boxes for Mapping Behaviour marked "Ignore case" and "Ignore spaces", etc. The unwary might think that this refers to content rather than the object name. There is plenty of space to put in 'Ignore case in column name'. Ditto the others. Crispin / comments

David Thanks for your reply. I did that and it worked just fine. I fall into the category of 'reluctant DBA' because I need to know about SQL Server for by web/software development activities. Collation has passed me by thus far - is there any reason why I shouldn't leave the column with a case-sensitive collation rather than reverting it? Thanks Crispin / comments

I've now worked out how to do it - it was a combination of the suggestions above. The SQL Server Browser Service has to be running and then a Firewall exception created for sqlbrowser.exe. Presumably the service status could be detected as the application starts. Under no circumstances should there be a modal dialogue box, maybe just something on the project dialogue to start the service if local SQL Server Express instances are required. It's on this box that one's eye will be concentrating, so that's probably the best place for it (rather than the toolbar). The firewall could be modified on installation (with the approval of the user of course). Crispin / comments

Neil, Mike I had a go at disabling the Windows Firewall and it made no difference to the listing (ie the local SQL Express was absent and remote instances of SQL Server 2000 were present). Crispin / comments

It prevented the activity log from functioning effectively ie the activity log started but because of the error, I had to close VS2010. The reason that I kicked off the activity log in the first place was that one of the (many) VS extensions I have installed was causing instability and I wanted to find out which one. I suspect that the instability is not being caused by SQL Prompt but something else, but I haven't yet established which something else. / comments

Hi David Objects that no longer exist or have been renamed pretty much sums it up. Glad to hear that SQL Prompt will fix it in the future. However, it would also be useful to be able to run a check from SQL Compare because that's where the problem will be mercilessly exposed. Crispin / comments
