Every time someone has voiced concerns that RedGate would start using the forced update feature to screw their end-users for money, we were told that it was Lutz who added the feature, and to stop being so paranoid.
Well guess what? That was a lie. From March 2011, anyone who wants to use Reflector - even if they're happy will v6 - will have to pay for it.
In March 2012, when v8 comes along, we'll probably find that v7 stops working and now we've got to pay $100 to upgrade.
Just because we're paranoid, it doesn't mean that RedGate aren't a bunch of evil lying scumbags! :evil: / comments

At the very least they should release a final update to v6 to disable the auto-update / auto-deletion policy.
At the moment, as soon as a new version is released the old version stops working and deletes itself. RedGate have always insisted that this was added by Lutz, and they had no intention of using it to force users to buy a commercial version of the product.
Now we find out that was a crock of bull. As soon as v7 gets released, v6 will stop working and demand $35. The claims that this will be "a perpetual license, with no time bomb or forced updates" should be given as much credence as it deserves - i.e. none. There's absolutely nothing to stop them from deciding when v8 comes out that everyone should now have to pay another $100 to keep using the product, even if they don't want to upgrade.
I can understand them charging me for the new version, but if I'm happy to keep using v6, why the f*!k should I have to pay for v7? :x

Fair point. But if a farmer did give you a sack of potatoes for free, you wouldn't expect him to turn up on your doorstep six months later demanding that you either pay him or return the potatoes.
Once you've given something away for free, I don't see a problem with charging for future updates, but if you try to stop anyone from using the free version and force them to pay for the new version, you're only going to p!ss people off. / comments

You (RedGate) are consistently responding to this by trying to weasel out of your commitment, pretending that things you said didn't mean what we all thought they meant. Whilst I wouldn't say I'm happy that you're going to charge for v7, I can understand why you're doing it, and I'm not particularly surprised. People who expect that existing versions of free tools won't be taken away from them
So far, your only response to this has been, "Lutz done it! It's not our fault! Buy v7 and it won't ever expire, honest guv!" You have completely ignored the huge difference between forcing users of a free program to upgrade to the latest free version, and forcing users of a free program to upgrade to a paid-for version. What you are doing here can only be compared to extortion.
Try to imagine the reaction if Microsoft announced that SQL Express wasn't making them enough money, so the next version would cost $10, and buried in the FAQ was a note that existing installations of any previous version of SQL Express would stop working and delete themselves if you didn't upgrade.
Or if that's too difficult, try this: a girl you had sex with at university tracks you down and announces that, as she's now a prostitute, you need to pay her for sleeping with you; if you don't, she'll claim you raped her.

Agreed. However, I think we have a reasonable right to expect that those tools which are free will continue to work until the OS no longer supports them. I don't expect RedGate to update v6 to support Windows 12, but I certainly don't expect v6 to suddenly stop working just because RedGate want my money!

I do not agree that they have the right to expire v6 and force everyone to pay for the upgrade.
I appreciate that a free v6 without an expiry date would mean less people would pay for v7, but that's not an excuse. Reflector is a tool, not a service. Forced upgrades for services are acceptable; forced upgrades for tools are not. / comments

I've just installed v6, and all of my configuration settings were lost. To get them back, I copied the "Reflector.cfg" file from the Reflector directory to "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Red Gate\.NET Reflector 6\".
It would be nice if the new version could detect the old settings file on first use. In the mean time, it would probably be worth adding this to the FAQ. / comments
