Hi,
I have just bundled the error text in an email to Matt as he asked about my query "Jobs in progress - mixed messages" and it was connected to that.
If you take a look at the files there and need more info please feel free to call me.
regards

I have done some preliminary tests on network failures and have to agree, the methods employed work very well.
I would like to see that network issues were encountered during the process recorded somewhere in the GUI or the log.
Have mentioned it elsewhere but seems appropriate here too; I would like to see the progress made in the backup job logged. If the job does many databases and some got completed before the network error then identifying that they are complete, one has failed/suffered issues and others are (potentially) not backed up as the job exited after x retries...

Hi Matt,
Its a bit tricky to compare our test rig to production. We have it mainly for functionality testing rather than performance testing. The h/w is so different I wouldnt look to compare the figures too closely.
Test rig is a virtual server with single CPU little RAM and single HDD, production is 2 dual core 8 HDD split in 3 arrays and 20GB RAM.
The test I just ran was a backup to local HDD followed by verify and then copy over WAN to DR site. While it ran a ping on the line was showing 5% lost packets. The WAN is 4Mbps but has QOS on it for our main app so I dont know exactly what bandwidth would have been available.
I have since run a backup straight to the DR site and that completed (Duration) in 07:45 with SSMS showing 16:28 so its marginally quicker to backup direct to network than backup and then copy. Would you expect that?
Also testing on different (smaller) database so as to not take too much out of WAN in work hours. Production job takes 1:45 (Duration) to backup live db but SSMS says job finishes in 2:00:00. Its currently doing a copy of 3.1GB (v5 comp level 3) so getting level 4 from v6 is hopefully going to be a big gain for us.

Nigel,
Connecting to the test server now and the UI shows no 'In Progress' jobs. The scheduled ones have executed and there is no activity.
I started a job to further review the situation. It creates a backup of two databases direct to our DR site and generally runs for 10-15 minutes.
Clicking on the server name the In Progress tab shows the job executing on the 2nd database. Clicking on the first database name there is no entry in In Progress, nor is there one in Activity History - my database is in no-mans-land..? This is a partial aside to this thread though.
I cannot currently get the In Progress tab to show anything out of the ordinary, if it occurs again I will update here.
subsequent note:
There is no Activity History for any database :? / comments

Hi Nigel,
I only have one server to test v6 on I'm afraid so cant advise on the effects of the actions that you describe. I can confirm that shutting down v6 and restarting the application has no effect. The in progress jobs were still there, even the next day.
Yes, I had noted in v5 that the verify part of the job leaves the job showing as in progress but that is also true in SSMS (ie its still shown as Executing in Agent Jobs. / comments
