Why is SQL Search disabled.

When I click on SQL Search, the SQL Search tab comes up, but the search box, and all the drop down boxes are grayed out. The only items that respond to the mouse are "Index" and "Help". I have tried reindexing, cancel indexing, closing and reopening SQL Search, closing and reopening SSMS.
