It says that C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ssms.exe is running. It is not. Is it the service that needs stopped?

Under normal circumstances no, closing SSMS should suffice for installation. Are you running visual studio as well? Any ssms processes still running in task manager?
