How can we help you today? How can we help you today?

What have you been up to this February?

Hi everyone,

Hope you're well.

We'd love to find out what you've been doing in the community. Please do share any contributions you've made or successes you've had in February. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know each other better and celebrate one another's achievements.

I'll start, last month I met lots of you at SQL Bits and had a great time sharing a drink with you.

Now, it's your turn. What have you been up to?

Cheers,

Roseanna

    Hi all,

    SQL Bits does kind of take over doesn't it?
    I had a good two there. The FoRG drinks was very good, and great to meet up with you all.

    Thanks for sharing the photo as well Roseanna.
    This week I'll be going through the photos I took.

    Cheers,

    Rodders...

    I'm writing something for SQLServerCentral that uses work I did with Soundex type algorithms and SQLCLR to enhance full text search.  After that I've promised Tony Davis to write something to hook SQLMonitor to security metrics.
    Last year I was inspired by Redgate SQL Source Control to build a mechanism to place a non-Microsoft distributed column store called Vertica under source control.  When you see something done it gives you a "Why didn't I think of that?" moment.  My colleagues and I have been working to get the mechanism Dockerised and implement a deployment pipeline.  We wouldn't have got this far or been so successful if we hadn't seen the way that Redgate does it for SQL Server.

    Hi everyone

    Well, probably the most excited things was my first presentation on SQLBits (https://sqlbits.com/Sessions/Event18/Lets_go_deep_in_SQL_Server_Unit_Testing_with_Visual_Studio), I had the opportunity of sharing with many people from SQL community.  In March, I am working on improve the design and some cosmetic changes in my personal blog and well I have in the Todo list to write 1 article dedicated to SQLData generator of RedGate, I will put in contact with @RoseannaW when I would completed.

    Cheers,
    Geo

    @Geovanny_Hernandez - I'm curious to know what you mean by "not native in your abstract: "I have been working with many full-stack developers and one of the most important complaints is related to the fact that AAA (Arrange-Act-Assert) is not native "?

    Hi @Geovanny_Hernandez,

    That's brilliant - congratulations on presenting your first session at SQL Bits  >:O

    I'd be delighted to help you write an article for Redgate, I've replied to your email.

    Best wishes

    Mostly putting together the last pieces in place for SQL Saturday Spokane (March 23). If our attendance ratio matches last year's we'll have 80-100 or so folks through the door on the day. Just a few follow up emails and we'll be good to go!

    My February flew by!  We have been doing a bunch of stuff at work around trying to incorporate unit testing into our development process so that we can be on the same page with our software engineering counterparts.  This is all within the midst of our new journey down our transformation into the agile methodology.

    On the personal side, we have just set the date for the 2019 SQL Saturday Sioux Falls.  It will be on August 10th.  We will be doing Pre-Cons again this year, so if anyone is interested in visiting South Dakota it would be a good excuse to present and take in some of the events going on that weekend.  We are also looking for sponsors to help with expenses.  I am just working on finalizing the SQL Saturday website details, so it's not posted online yet, but will be soon!

    Also, it's still snowing in South Dakota which is always a depressing surprise.  We can't wait to start thawing a bit and to see some of our HUGE snowpiles melt into puddles.

    Hi @David Atkinson , I was refering into the context of the session,about the environment that C# developers (or full-stack) use to develop, in my specific experience this is Visual Studio and programming of Unit Tests classes, which includes into the constructor of their classes a generic arrange section for the Unit Tests. A common request of many of these developers is to continue working/develop their Unit Tests without have to leave VS and move to other context or UI, in fact in the session I focused in these specific kind of roles, obviously, for DB roles (DBA,DB Dev, DB Engineers, etc) our main tool is SSMS or Azure Data Studio.

    @Geovanny_Hernandez How does your project differ from Ed Elliott's tSQLt adaptor, which attempts to provide access to tSQLt tests from Visual Studio?

    February was definitely the month of SQLBits for me! I was very fortunate to be able to attend SQLBits and:
    • Present a regular session there on Azure Cosmos DB
    • Co-Present a full day pre-conference session on Azure Infrastructure
    • Attend the FoRG meetup. It was so nice to be able to get together with you all!
    I'm very much looking forward to March, as we will have our SQL Saturday here in a few weeks. Maybe the weather will start to warm up as well.

    Cheers!

    Hi @David Atkinson
    Thanks for asking, I have read this project of Ed Elliot, it looks very interesting, however, the approach that I presented in my session was focus into a "progressive" way of solving some problems and improving Visual Studio Unit Testing projects, in the second demo I I demonstrated how you can use tSQLt inside VS, but keeping the use of Unit Test classes from VS, how can I did that? Basically deploying tSQLt framework inside your target Unit Test DB, in my demo for instance, I used the function  tSQLt.FakeTable inside my class ( I can't not past the image directly here, let me to send you by email).

    In my last demo, I presented a personal project which consisted in an extension of existing C# class that you can use and develop Unit Test with the advantage that you can copy/paste the results directly of SSMS and organize into your assert section, something like:

     [TestMethod]        public void usp_CheckingDataInsertedIntoProcessMetricSegmentIsOk()        {
                RunTest(Actions.CreateBlock(@"
                --Initial load with valid values for the PlayerMetricSegment which is the base value            --for calculating the new range of dates
                 EXEC tSQLt.FakeTable 'dbo.ProcessMetricSegment';                        --Act            EXEC [dbo].[usp_SetProcessBySegment]                @range_start =1 ,                @range_end =3 ,                @initial_date ='20190101',                @segmentid = 1                        --Assert            --DataSet 1
                SELECT RangeValue,ProjectedDate             FROM ProcessMetricSegment;
                ")          .ResultsetShouldBe(1, @1 2019-01-02                                  2 2019-01-03                                  3 2019-01-04));        }
    This project is in Github:  https://github.com/geohernandez/SQLBits2019

    If you have any doubt or simply you want to talk more about it, please, you can send me an email and we can schedule a chat, I always be available for RedGate people :-)

    @Geovanny_Hernandez - ah, so you want devs to have their app code unit tests and DB unit tests run by the same framework, so you're wrapping tSQLt tests in VS unit test scaffolding? I'm interested in that screenshot. My email is David.Atkinson@red-gate.com

    Thanks for sharing everyone.

    josh_smith and @BobPusateri, I hope your SQL Saturdays go well and that you have a great day!
    @adam_hafner, I'll take a look at SQL Saturday Sioux Falls to see if Redgate can sponsor in some capacity :)
