Though I like the new look and feel of version 8, I would like to see the recent project list return or be a user preference. When you started version 7, the comparison project box had the last 6 projects that had been saved. With version 8, you only get the last project. You have to close the dialog box to access the file menu to get the recent list of projects. I never used the coments for the project in version 7, so the fact these were depreciated is not an issue.

I do wish when choosing create a synchronization script, I could also choose to make a backup or a snaphot. This option is only available if I choose synchronize using SQL Compare.

Another option for synchronizing I would like to see is to be able to create and save a reversal script of the changes. That way, when deploying the changes, you can offer a script to back out the changes if necessary.

The dropdown in v8.0 *is* a recently used list. It's just that you've only loaded one project. If you create/load a few more the list should grow. Could you play with this some more and let us know if it works as you would hope it to.

You can choose the "Synchronize using SQL Compare" option, click Next, Next, select your Backup option, Next, click on the Synchronization Script tab and select Save Script. However, you're right about the omission in the "Create a synchronization script" option. I can't recall what the logic is for not allowing the option here.

The idea behind the 'save schema snapshot' is to provide a means to create a rollback script, as all you need to is to synchronize your schema snapshot against your database to generate the rollback script. Of course, if you haven't taken a full backup, you might lose data if a column was dropped in the synch, for example.

I do have several projects in the recent list. My complaint is that when I start sql compare version 8, the dialog box opens with the last project saved. You have to close that dialog box to access the file menu to get the most recent list.

Yes, that's true. It's a trade off, as in many cases the last project will be the one most people want loaded, but if it isn't it adds one click to the workflow. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has an opinion on how SQL Compare should default on start up.

    Thanks!

I'd rather SQL Compare start up or have the option to start with the load project/open project screen instead of defaulting to my last opened project. 90% of the time I'm not opening the last project since I am the only DBA and I do the compares for all databases.

I concur with Giggles220... I would rather see the old project selection screen (with all projects, not just 6) than be prompted to open my last project only. Make it an option maybe for the different types of DBAs you have as customers?

Though, I'm not going to fight too hard for this one. I already won my synchronization arrow battle and may want to quit while I'm ahead. :-)

Arron, please allow me to carry on the torch on this one. :)

I'd guess that less than 50% of the time the last used comparison is the one I'm going to use when I crack out SQL Compare the next time. I am also the sole DBA in charge of comparisons.

Personally, I would prefer a checkbox in the application options that works along the lines of "open last project on startup" When not checked SQL Compare starts and looks as though I just canceled out of the comparison dialog, allowing me to use the 6 (plus or minus as defined by another variable in application options?) last used list to find the project I need.

Given the manner in which we cycle through our change management, I will rarely need to compare the same database that I did the last time I opened the application. That said, I can live with one extra click to open and use the app. :)
