New Recently-Used Projects dropdown - feedback request

For v8.0 we've replaced the Comparison Projects dialog with a list of six recently used projects. Projects are now saved explicitly to the file system with Save and Save As, rather than auto-saved as they were previously. We've also replaced the 'comments' column in comparison projects and replaced this with the filename, which used to be hidden from view.

We're looking to get some detailed feedback on this area and how/if this might work for you.

Thanks very much for any comments on this!

I like the idea of Save/Save As to explicitly save projects. I occasionally compare databases that I do NOT want to create a "project" for. It's just a temporary one-time kind of thing. However, the dialog in previous versions was FAR superior in my opinion.

I actually couldn't even find the recent projects drop-down in the new version at first. I expected the folder icon in the toolbar to open the same "Open File" dialog that the menu used so I didn't ever click it. That's not a huge deal because now that I know it's there I will use it, it just wasn't obvious at first.

Also, I would like to see more than 6 projects in there. 6 is okay for a default, but I should be able to set the number I want to see and the drop-down should scroll if I have more than 6.

Alternately, instead of a "Recently used projects" list, how about a "Favorites" list?

A favorites list is a good idea. Would that be instead of a recently used list or in conjunction to it?

It was always our intention to change the icon so that it's more discoverable. If you could pick a number (other than six), what would that be?

    Thanks!

I would keep the "Recently Used" list too.

I think you're going to have a hard time picking a number for "Recently Used" projects that will satisfy everyone. A user-defined setting would be much better. You could probably force the setting to be between 1 and 99.

Personally, i prefer the auto save feature of SQL Compare 7 compared to the save/save as feature of SQL Data Compare. I don't like having to come up with unique names for each "project". I would rather have the tool keep track of that info and make it that much quicker for me.

    Hi,

The reason why we're moving away from auto-save is so that it is possible to tinker with project settings without losing changes that could have taken a significant amount of time to configure.

In the actual release we're defaulting the name to:

    SourceDBName v TargetDBName.scp

    Keep the feedback coming!

If you provide a default value for the "project" then that is good enough for me! I don't like being forced into naming it myself, just give me the option if I need it.
