I have a client that asked me for recommendations for data masking in their pre-production environment. Based on their needs, I pointed them to Data Masker, but they had a couple of questions I couldn't answer offhand:
  • Is it still available as a standalone product, or is it only available through SQL Provision?
  • Can it replace data within XML columns?
  • Can it replace data within text columns (for example, a Social Security Number embedded in a log record)?

Can you point me to the right person to get answers for them?

Thanks,
Ed

Hi @eleightondick Thank you for the question!

    1) The product IS available standalone although financially it does make the most sense to look at SQL Provision as a whole, the cloning aspect is particularly useful for creating said pre-production environments and auditing where we're putting data and how we're protecting it.

    2) There is functionality within Data Masker to mask XML columns: https://documentation.red-gate.com/dms6/data-masker-help/masking-rules/about-xml-masker-rules

    3) Unfortunately not - you can do find-replaces in text columns for single values (but this wouldn't be applicable in this instance where all the values are different SSNs) - assuming the column is freehand text there are multiple challenges associated with this such as false positives, different spacing styles, people putting numbers in with letters etc. so there are a couple of ways around it to try and keep the data realistic. If you would like to go through these in a bit more depth please feel free to send me a DM and I'll be happy to go through some with you.

    Thank you very much!
