System.Threading.dll and the SDK

Is the older system.threading.dll still required for RedGate.SQLCompare.Engine in v12.1? Is there a newer version where it is not? We have an old vb.net project that is using the SDK, and in an unrelated section of this program, I'd like to use the .NET 4.0 System.Threading methods. I'm getting an ambiguous namespace error, of course, and from what I've researched, there is no way to alias this issue away in VB.net.

Is there any work around that anyone has found?
