How can we help you today? How can we help you today?

Friend of the Year - who are you thankful for?

Thanksgiving was celebrated by many last week, and no matter where you are in the world, it's always good to reflect and be thankful.

As we draw closer to the end of the year, I'd like to take this as an opportunity to award a 'Friend of the Year'. I'd like you all to nominate a fellow FoRG who has made a positive impact on you this year. This is your chance to show your appreciation for someone in the FoRG Program, and ensure that they get the thanks they deserve for impacting your year for the better.

It'd be great to see each you all show your appreciation for another FoRG - to do this, just post a comment below. Please post here before December 15.

Before the year is out, a group of us at Redgate HQ will review this forum discussion (reading your stories and nominations, as well as reviewing the 'likes' and 'agrees' to each of the posts). We'll then announce Redgate's Friend of the Year 2017. This is a new award, and hopefully something that you'll all get behind. <3

I would like to nominate Alex Yates, I have followed his activity in RG forums and I consider that his contributions are valuable, especially, because his vision about the world of Devops from DB perspective represents a very interesting source of learning.

I want to nominate Bob Pusateri. This has been a year of many changes and challenges for me, and Bob has been there to support, advice and encourage me - every single day - without ever asking for anything in return.

Unsure about a blog post? Bob will read and provide honest and constructive feedback. Nervous about a new project? Bob will tell you that you'll do fine and listen to your panicked rambling. Stuck on a SQL Server task? Bob will help walk you through it. Having a particularly bad week? Bob will send you an e-mail with kind words and a funny article to read so it's waiting for you when you wake up.

With a friend like Bob, I have been able to grow and learn this year, instead of feeling overwhelmed and giving up. And for that, I will be forever grateful. He's without a doubt my Friend of the Year :)

Thank you Geovanny. That means a lot. :-)

I've taken a look through the directory and there are so many people I want to nominate! I've now written and deleted this post many times, nominating different people every time. (Sorry to Cathrine Wilhelmsen, Bob Walker, Rob Sewell, Troy Hunt and the John Morehouse/Chris Yates double act. You were all a close second.) This just goes to show how many folks in this program contribute so much.

I've settled on Alessandro Alpi. Earlier this year I was with a customer who had lot's of developers and lots of databases with lots of cross DB dependencies. They wanted to move to the dedicated model but each time they respawned their local dev server there was the painful task of re-linking all the databases in SQL Source Control. This was a slow process, exasperated because of the size and complexity of some of the databases.

We took Alessandro's PowerShell script to auto-link the databases, tweaked it a bit to make it work in Git (it was designed for TFS) and hey presto - we had a magic "link all my databases to source control" button. Sweet!

Thanks Ale, you helped us out. You made a specific contribution that was enormously valuable and useable for me and one of my customers.

    Thanks Geovanny, means a lot.

I've been struggling with this one because there are so many folks in the directory I want to nominate.

I've decided to nominate Alessandro Alpi because he made a specific contribution that I was able to use and take value from.

Earlier this year I was with a customer who wanted to move to the dedicated model in SQL Source Control. They had lots of developers and lots of databases across two instances and many dependencies between the databases.

We established a process to automate the provisioning of a local dev server with both instances and all the databases (with appropriate test data) on the dev laptops but the process of linking to source control was slow, manual and painful.

We took Alessandro's PowerShell script which automates the linking process in SQL Source Control, tweaked it to work with Git (it was designed for TFS) and hey presto - we had a magic "link all my databases" button. Sweet!

Ale, thank you. You saved us all a bunch of work. And for that reason I nominate you as FoRG of the year. :-)

I'd like to nominate Alex Yates, too.

The reason is simple, he's helping all the community to understand and to "own" the devops concepts, that are (IMHO) the foundation of a new perspective across the IT. At least it should be :-)

Then, he's contributing into this forum also and, additionally, his clever approach to automation in real scenarios is useful and reliable. As a result, he's one of the most important people to listen to.

    Just my two cents.
And thanks @AlexYates, it means a lot for me!

Too many great Friends to choose from! For me, even though I have no personal connection, Ola Hallengren gets my thanks.

The fantastic Maintenance Solution he provides continues to deliver, and it's probably THE single most recommendation I make to customers. This year was the year I went completely freelance, and thanks to Ola I know I can put in place on customers' servers a solution that will just keep working, but with the ability to tweak and tune as I go along.

My FORG who has impacted me immensely over the past year is John Morehouse. To be a big guy he is one of the most humble people I know; having an opportunity to work with him on SQL Saturday Events and User Groups has enabled me to glean traits and concepts that I had not thought of before.

There have been many hours spent talking in regards to ideas, thoughts, new processes, etc. and not one time has John ever not encouraged me to push the envelope. His work ethic is something I admire and his constant willingness to help data professionals learn is second to none. A great person with a great heart; we are lucky to have him in the community.

Here is to you John ~ cheers

Have your say on who should be Redgate’s Friend of the Year 2017. This is a person who has made a positive impact on the FoRG Community this year.
The FoRGs below are people who have been recognised both throughout the year by Redgaters as our Friends of the Month, as well as those who were nominated by other FoRGs in our latest discussion.
This poll gives both FoRGs and Redgaters the opportunity to vote for who they’d like to award Friend of the Year 2017. We'll announce who has won this award (based on the poll stats) in January 2018.

Each of the FoRGs will be announced below - please 'like' to cast your vote!

@AlexYates gets my vote too. I don't know where he gets the time but the SQL community is certainly benefiting.

I'd also like to nominate @kevriley because it takes a lot for a Lancastrian to admit that Yorkshire black pudding is the best.
