AutomaticSchemaChange.patch - what is this and why does it have what it has in it?

Can someone tell me what these AutomaticPatch files are for (for simple migration scripts), how they get populated, how they get used for simple migration scripts that have nothing to do with their content, and how to debug and troubleshoot release errors caused by them?
