Should SQL Data Compare 13 be able to read SQL 2014 compressed backup file as a target?

I am not able to set a SQL 2014 compressed backup file as a target. When I rerun the backup uncompressed it works fine.

This is correct. A known issue that we don't support compressed native backups. We support SQL Backup compressed backups: https://documentation.red-gate.com/display/SDC12/Working+with+backups

This is a deal breaker for me....
"You can't compare compressed backups from SQL Server 2012 or later."
