I like it but I don't like it. As a random internet user, if I happened upon a post by a user that was tagged both with "Noob" and with "Friend of Redgate" I'd feel weird.

Thanks for the input! That is a very good point. What would you suggest as the lowest/first rank name? There is also a very good chance that we would create special ranks for FoRGs. -
Perhaps less about rank and more about accomplishment? I'm thinking Stackoverflow, though I grant they have waaaay more badges than you'd like. Maybe just highlight the number of posts and "score" based on up-votes?

To build on robrich's point, I think there is perhaps a risk of a 'noob' (lower level) user not being taken as seriously. I wonder if there is a way to encourage new contributors - perhaps something like 'new contributor', to signify that whilst content may be in an unfamiliar style, it's not necessarily inexperienced and shouldn't be perceived in the way that 'noob' is sometimes taken to be an indicator of a lack of knowledge. I suspect that a high proportion of the sites' users will lurk for a while, and only contribute when they have something important or worthwhile to say. Everyone, after all, has to start somewhere. Just my 2p...

Hi @D_A_Green, thanks for the input. That's a really good suggestion, we certainly don't want any ranks to discourage people from contributing - quite the opposite.

Could I get one that says "The Voice"?
-
I'd like mine to read "Most High Lord of Gorgsnirk, Destroyer of Queries"
Also, I agree, "Noob" probably isn't helpful at the moment. Rookie? Fresher? -
Maybe badges like:
"Hub Contributor", "Hub Member", "Inquisitive" (asking a question), "Helper" (answer), etc. -
We are currently thinking about a rank scheme based on images (increasing number of stars for example) rather than names, it also gives us more potential ranks to play around with. I will share some drafts when we have them.
@way0utwest Badges are another area that we want to improve, we switched them on today but are currently just using the default ones that come with the software.
Now custom ranks... That might be a fun thing! @Grant I like your idea  -
An update for you.
Based on the feedback in this thread we decided to go with a visual rank system rather than using words.
You can read about the changes in our new General Forum here: https://forum.red-gate.com/discussion/81570/redgate-forum-ranks but if you have additional feedback please post it in this thread rather than there.
Thanks again for the input.

Great to see these forums becoming more and more active as you all get involved. As some of you may know from my previous post we want these Redgate forums to be the best place for users of our tools to help each other out - thank you to those of you that have already got stuck in to the Product forums and answered questions for our users.
One of the next things that we want to implement are ranks to give all users (as well as FoRGs) recognition for their contributions to the community. This is just meant to be a bit of fun with the plan being that a user's rank will increase along with their reputation on the forums. Reputation will be gained through various actions on the forums for example posts or answers that are 'liked' by other users.
I need ideas on what to call these ranks and thought that the FoRGs might have some good ones. Please post away - there is no such thing as a bad idea.
As an example here is the only idea I've had so far - I'm sure you can come up with something better, or feel free to criticise my ideas
I'll let this discussion run for a week or so and then make a decision based on feedback from you. You should then see the new ranks shortly after that.
Thanks in advance for your input.
