I can recreate this bug on my machine and will look into a fix for you.
In the meantime you can disable automatically re-opening tabs on startup by unticking the option “Restore open tabs when SQL Server Management Studio starts†under Tab History on the options dialog. -
I've just updated our beta build (6.1.0.33) which hopefully has a fix for this. It will attempt a connection in the background and only tell ssms to connect that tab if our connection succeeds.

This basically renders the Tab History product useless. I can't wait 5-10 minutes for SQL Mgmt Studio to free up when I open my laptop.
