SQL Compare 10.2.0.916 and SQL Server 2000

When SQL Compare starts to register the data sources of a SQL Server 2000 database it aborts with an error message of "Specified cast is not valid" when reading table columns.

Using SQL Compare 9.5.0.282 the same comparison against the same database servers and databases is successful, however.

This seems to happen on pretty much all databases, even onces that had not changed in months.

Thanks for your post. We've got this logged as an issue in our bug tracking system under reference number SC-5801.

I don't honestly know if this will be fixed since support for SQL Server 2000 has been deprecated, however I will keep you updated with any news of a fix.

Thanks for your patience. We have now fixed this, and it should be available in a release of the tool which will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

I bought the SQL Developer Bundle last week. Support for SQL 2000 was working fine before and was critical in my decision to purchase the product. SQL Compare is now useless to me without support for SQL 2000. Waiting a couple of weeks for fix seems unreasonable. Does RedGate not offer hot fixes for bugs they introduce? Can I uninstall the product and install a previous version?

I am running version 10.0.0.160 without any problems but do see problems with latest. Could you post this older version for download? I only saw through 9.5 of SQL compare as available from older versions download.

Can you post when the release of the updated version with the bug fix will be? I need to justify a purchase of this to my boss and we are supporting sql 2000 production data.

Sorry, I didn't realise there were replies to this as the e-mail notification didn't work :/

Anyway, you can get V10.1.065 from the below link:

Just to reiterate, "Specified Cast is not valid" is a generic exception and therefore will never be eradicated. First, yes, it could be a programming mistake. But more commonly, it's inconsistency in the metadata describing the database schema.

I'd recommend emailing support at red-gate.com and open a support case.
