VDI error 1010 - repeatable

I have been getting VDI error 1010: Failed to get configuration from server error messages every day on 2 of 8 databases that I backup sequentially. Turns out I had a default instance and a named instance, with mostly the exact same database names (one is development, one is QA) executing the backup job at exactly the same time on the same box.

Only the two largest databases produce the error. They do so only on the default instance, not the named instance. The rest of the backups are OK in both instances.

I upgraded to the FTP patch 3.2.0.5 and still get the error.

I've changed the time of the backup, but I'd like to see this working.

Also, please document that the extented proc interface gives a zero on success and a one on failure.

    Are you using the -I parameter for the backup on the named instance?

    Yes. Like I mentioned, most of the backups on both sides work fine. Further proof that these are copies of the same databases is that the size of the backup files differs on the named instance side vs. the default instance side.

    What is the timing of the backups, for these 2 databases on both instances i.e. does backup for database A on named instance starts first, then backup for database A on default instance starts next etc?

    As I said initially, both jobs start at exactly the same time. Since there are a few more databases in development (default instance) than QA, QA reaches the databases that fail first. So the error happens in the default instance which got to the databases while the backup on the named instance was in progress.

    Could you pls check the vdi.log file in the SQL Server log folder, and see if any errors were recorded at the time of the backup failure on the 2 large databases? Thanks.

    Here is the entire VDI.LOG file from the default instance. The backups are at 2 AM so that is where you will see the errors. I suspect those Status Code 2 errors.

    Do you encounter the error if you manually backup the large database on the named instance using the extended stored procedure (in Query Analyzer), wait a while, then backup the large database on the default instance, again using the extended stored procedure?

    No. I have now the two backup jobs an hour apart (each jobs backs up multiple databases), and there are no errors being reported.

    I meant if you could reproduce the problem manually by backing up on one instance, then while the backup runs, start another manual backup on the other instance, for the database of the same name. Then try with a database of a different name.
