ok, it's installed now. Two differences from the first time: 1. SSMS was closed and 2. I was sitting here this time and did installation quickly; the first time I had left it for 10 minutes to return to the Finished screen.
Now I wonder if the "Admin-Access required" popup from Windows 7 had timed out and that was not detected by the MSI? -
Possibly! Or it could be your computer behaving because you were watching it!
I think we need to take a look at how the installer runs with different user account levels as it's something we haven't really looked at in the installer testing (people with db access are always admins right? )
Thanks for the feedback though, I've logged your issue.

Everything appeared to work fine, but I could not find any sign of the app in the start menu or in SSMS.
I looked in the event log and found these two entries:
Product: SQL Search 1 -- Installation failed.
Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: SQL Search 1. Product Version: 1.0.0.269. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Red Gate Software Ltd.. Installation success or error status: 1602.
I did have SSMS open when i performed the installation (by mistake). I shall try installing again without it open..
