I found similar behavior (perhaps the same) in the project configuration dialog. But it happened to me with an instance of SQL Server 2000.
But then I found that once I wrote the instance name by hand, it got recognized. The database list was fetchend and since then the instance apears in the server list. I am guessing it got cached. / comments
