I see no point in time bombing the current 'free' version. It will become obsolete over time with advancement in .the NET technology stack anyway.
A more astute company leader would have recognised this and avoided the PR fallout that is currently ensuing.
The cycnical side to my thinking offers that Redgate are seeking to flog a dead horse and see no real business opportunity in continuing development of the 'product'. This is simply nothing more than an exercise to recoup some of the money paid for the tool before retiring it by forcing the currently commited user base to purchase a licence. / comments

To give it real credibility I think the statement should be changed from
"Perpetual licensing means that the version of Reflector you purchase is yours to keep forever. You will also get any minor upgrades for free"
to
"We promise that perpetual licensing means that the version of Reflector you purchase is yours to keep forever. You will also get any minor upgrades for free."
Doing so would help avoid future misinterpreted intentions and/or commitments.
