Let me resume on what I want to do: 1) I want to install SQLBackup Pro on *one* computer. 2) I want to backup databases on 3 different machines, one machine is the same machine that the SQLBackup Pro is installed on, the other 2 are remote computers that doesn't have SQLBackup Pro installed. 3) To backup databases on the remote machines I remotely install the server components. 4) When I focus one of the SQL Server nodes in the 'SQL Server Group' the computers I have installed the server components on remotely, tell me that the installation is in trial mode. 5) Therfore I asked the question: 'Do I have to install the license on these machines also' I do this by right clicking the server node and using the 'License activation' option. 6) Brian, says 'Yes, activate them' so I do (well, only one amchine so far) 7) Now you have answered 'For a server with multiple SQL Server instances installed, you only need to activate the license once, on any one of the instance.' 8) I'm now confused :-) Sorry for being so dumb, but I think I'm not interpreting correctly the answers. I have just purchased the Professional version and install the key as well as activating the product. I have also done a 'Install/upgrade server components on the remote machine'. Jessica: Thanks for the information, that help me a lot and I have managed to identify the obsolete files and manually remove them. It might be worth including a utility to do this cleanup in a future version, as I'm sure many users could benefit from it. Once again, thanks for your detailed help. Martin. / comments

Thanks to all who have contributed. I have managed to recover the data I was interested in. Lots of lessons have be learnt, and once again Redgate make this all so easy. Great job guys! / comments

Okay, when I do a Full backup, and don't perform a Log backup, I take it the log is still preserved, so can I now do a Log backup and use that? A Log backup has not been performed yet, so is it still preserved? If so, can I use that Transaction Log to do a restore to a point in time? / comments

Eddie: Good questions! I'm not sure I know the answers, please allow me to elaborate. The whole purpose of the exercise is to reduce the size of the daily backups. The database is just over 2Gb and the compressed size is 250Mb. Of this, over half is historic data that does not change (ever). I thought that if I could move the historic data to a new filegroup, I could do much smaller daily backups. Currently we do 2 Full backups a day, and one Log backup per day. Now you know the situation and the goal we wish to achieve, what would you suggest? I have no problem doing a 'complete' backup once a week (including the historic data), and partial backups (no historical data) throughout the week. Is this possible? Your help is appreciated.
