We managed to get it sorted on one Windows XP machine by installing all Windows Updates (I think the problem was fixed by a .net update). Have another machine with the same problem, which I'll look at today to see if this corrects it. / comments

I have SQL Prompt 5.1.8.2 installed, but still having the same problem in BIDS 2008. When adding an expression to define the colour of a text field, previewing the report causes BIDS to crash. I've disabled SQL Prompt in BIDS, and everything is fine. / comments

Just installed on live server and same problem...the account definately has access to SQL. I suspect it doesn't have access to some folder or registry key. Goodness knows which one. / comments

Yep.
I've just had the same problem with the test server I've built. Had to add the account into the Administrators group. Not a complete disaster, but less than ideal. / comments

Many thanks for your help. It's got shared memory and tcp/ip enabled. / comments

Yes - I should have mentioned that. If I do 'run as..' for SSMS with the backup account it can connect to SQL no problem - it has sysadmin rights. / comments

This was a great suggestion. I've got the server software installed with my account, and run a backup successfully. I then changed the service properties to use the domain account created for SQL Backups and received the following error message:
SQL Backup v6.4.0.56
OLE DB error occured. Code 80070005h
Server : DEV-SQL-DB02
Windows authentication
Failed to connect to SQL Server instance: DEV-SQL-DB02
SQL Backup exit code: 586

exitcode 586
sqlerrorcode 0

Adding the account to the administrators group and restarting the service solves the problem, but I'd rather not do that if possible. I've tried disabling the Windows 2008R2 firewall, but that doesn't help. I've granted modify access on the backup folder, the folder the redgate compact database is in, the redgate log folder, the redgate registry keys. Still the same error. I've even tried running sysinternal's processmonitor but can't see anything that would cause the problem. I'm going to make the backup account administrator for now. / comments

Thanks for your suggestions. I've tried tortoise, and unlinking and relinking, and all give the same error message. Can't now linnk the database back at all. Looking in the VisualSVN event log on the server, we see the following error message, that I think explains everything:
Your evaluation license for VisualSVN Server Enterprise Edition is expired and Integrated Windows Authentication is no longer available. Please update your license key.
[client 172.19.225.87]
I set it all up with Windows Authentication (who wants to type in passwords all the time?), and now it won't work. I've requested an evaluation extension, and hopefully we'll be purchasing Enterprise Edition soon. / comments

We've been trialling this with VisualSVN server, but now our trial license has expired, the server has reverted from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition. SQL Source control no longer works - it gives an error 'Server sent unexpected return value (500 Not Licensed) in repsonse to OPTIONS request for.....'
Just thought I'd make others aware. The Enterprise license is currently $950 per server. / comments

I ran Process Monitor whilst attempting to activate the license and found that the account(s) used to run the Redgate backup services didn't have access to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Red Gate\Licenses. I granted them full control on C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Red Gate and that solved the problem. / comments
