You mention this as a database move. Is that from one server to another running the same build of SQL or an upgrade to another server running a different version/build of SQL?
Are you running on a SAN?

Lastly Chris.
We are using 6.5.2.9 and V 7 is due out shortly. I would at least get to 6.5.2.9 as it has some fixes to problems in 6.5.1.9. Petey should be able to help you get that version.

Chris,
have you seen the ERASEFILES_REMOTE option to delete the backups on a network share? I haven't used it but I am sure it will work. You just need to planout a strategy.
Good luck

Chris,
SQLBackup gives you the ability to delete before or after the backup is taken. I am assuming that your cleanup on the attached disk is at least a few hours after you have taken the backup that you copy to a network location.
You should still be able to take your backup to disk with a delete and then run the CopyTool. I haven't used the CopyTool or seen how it works but I am sure you can come up with a combination that can work for you?

Martin,
if this is truely read-only data could you not export it to another read-only database? if you access it then you would need to change your code but this would save the backup problem and possibly save the existing database from future expansion as you put more data into it.

Thinking this thru I should not expect any thruput improvement as I am still having to read the database that will populate the data buffer cache and as I have much more data than I have buffer cache, even with the extra memory, I should not expect faster backups.
I'll close this off then.

Thanks Petey. I will look at your topics.
I just thought that as we had more memory and that would only be for the data buffer, that the backups might have taken less time than before. I will examine the toal time taken and the verify portion since the memory upgrade happened. The server gets rebooted tonight and I am interested to see if that makes any difference.

On a 64_bit server I added the key and with a value of zero it looks no different (expected) but a value of 1 I see no activity history. Is this what it is expected to do?
Thanks

Chris,
That sounds like a good option. If you add the regkey it will disable the Timeline if the value is 1 and if the value is something else it will still give you the Timeline?
Does SQLBackup need to be stopped/started to make use of the regkey?
Thaanks

Chris,
Client looks like a completely new subkey in the registry for Red Gate\SQL Backup. I just looked at two of my 32 bit servers and they don't have the Client subkey.
Are there any other publically known registry key values that could be usefull?
Thanks
