What does 'Device: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx' mean?

Under the usage list of the Redgate licensing portal, you might see 'Device: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx' instead of an email address. It means that the license isn't associated with a users Redgate ID email and has been activated manually or using a serial number instead of logging in with a Redgate ID. For server based tools (SQL Backup, Redgate Monitor and SmartAssembly) you should expect to see device entries instead of Redgate IDs. For user based (desktop) tools, these anonymous users may be using up entitlements that are no longer required.

User based (desktop) tools or capacity based tools

You will see 'Device: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx' in the customer portal if the user:

  • Activated a license without using their Redgate ID – usually because they did a manual (offline) activation
  • Activated via the command line
  • Is using a very old tool version and didn't log in with their Redgate ID (prior to the launch of user account licensing in 2017)

If you're seeing the 'All entitlements claimed' message, the license owners and admins have the ability to remove them to free up the activation for a new user. However, it's not possible know what server the license was activated or by whom because there's no user information if a license is activated in this way.

SQL Backup & SmartAssembly

You will see a 'Device: xxx' user in the customer portal for both SQL Backup and SmartAssembly activations. 

SQL Backup is licensed per server and will record an entry in the portal anytime that serial key is activated against a server. 

SmartAssembly is licensed per build machine and similar to above, will record an entry in the portal whenever the tool is activated on a machine. 

Redgate Monitor permit based activations

It is expected behavior to see 'Device: xxx' users in the customer portal for Redgate Monitor. Generally, you will see this followed by the server name.

Do not remove these entries as it will deactivate the tool currently installed on that named server.

Note: that you shouldn't see individual email address entries here for server tools. If you do, remove them as they consume entitlements that can't then be allocated to monitor servers (see for example Missing License entitlements in SQL Monitor for redgate.com licenses or Failed to activate license...all entitlements claimed error for serial key-activated licenses).
