ALERT Listed Vary Based On Identical Filter Values

If I go to the ALERTS tab and accept the default filter settings of ALL ALERTS that have not been cleared and the first page shows me 25 alerts in the last 3 hours I can go to the filter and change it to show me just the last 3 hours worth of ALERTS and when I do that I see alerts I did not see previously when I should have. How is it this happens?

I've noticed similar behavior with the ANALYSIS tab. If I review the DISK READ I/O metric for the last hour and then change it to the last 6 hours the points shown on the chart change for the exact same point in time. This is very alarming but only today did I realize that the AL:ERTS tab is doing something similar.
