What does 'Device: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx' mean?

On the Usage tab of the Redgate licensing portal, the Current allocated users section may show "Device: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx". It means that the license isn't associated with a users Redgate ID email. It means a user has likely activated manually and/or using a serial number instead of logging in with their Redgate ID. For server-licensed tools (SQL Backup, Redgate Monitor and SmartAssembly) you should expect to see Device entries instead of ID's. For user-licensed (desktop) tools, these anonymous users may be using up entitlements they no longer require.

User-licensed (desktop) tools or Capacity-licensed tools

You will see a "Device: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx" user in the customer portal if that user:

If you're seeing the "All entitlements claimed" message, then owners and administrators of the license can investigate these anonymous users and if possible, remove them to free up the activation for someone else, as described in Removing A User (Freeing Up A License/Entitlement). However, we can't tell you on what server the license was activated or by whom.

SQL Backup & SmartAssembly

You will see a "Device: xxx" user in the customer portal for both SQL Backup and SmartAssembly activations.

SQL Backup is licensed per server and will record an entry in the portal anytime that serial key is activated against a server.

SmartAssembly is licensed per build machine and similar to above, will record an entry in the portal whenever the tool is activated on a machine.

Redgate Monitor permit based activations

You should see "Device: xxx" users in the customer portal for Redgate Monitor. This is the correct behavior.

Generally, you will see this followed by your server name (for serial key-activated Redgate Monitor licenses you just see the number, as above):

Do not remove these entries as it will deactivate the tool currently installed on that named server.

Note that you should not see email address entries here for server tools. If you do, remove them as they consume entitlements that can't then be used to monitor servers (see for example Missing License entitlements in SQL Monitor for redgate.com licenses or Failed to activate license...all entitlements claimed error for serial key-activated licenses).
